This newsletter is a 'call' to women to participate in the profound
awakening of feminine consciousness.
What do we mean when we say feminine consciousness? Women are part
of the web of life. Everything that we do in front of us, with our
hands, with our attention, affects life. And life needs our help
now. It needs women to reawaken our connection "to" life,
rather than living the "separation." From the office worker
to the homemaker, from the teacher and nurse's aid, to the executive,
all can respond to this call; no one is more or less valuable than
the other.
In months to come, I will be including in this newsletter not only
my own writing, but also writing from other women, with the intention
to explore the emerging language of feminine wisdom, and women's
relationship to life and the earth.
Feminine wisdom arises when we come together, for we are learning
to work in a new way, as one. It doesn't mean we necessarily have
to be together physically, although it is helpful from time to time
to meet in silence, in prayer, sharing our dreams and visions. But
there is another way to work together, and that is through our individual
attention as we each live our own lives. The more aware we become
of our own connection to life, the more we are able to feel the
web of our interconnections with other women in the world.
As Paulette Fox, Blackfoot woman and environmental scientist who
has spoken at several DreamWeather events, explains, Women are
the earth. Not like the earth. We are the earth. When we think about
taking care of the earth, we must take care of ourselves. Our destiny
is our common existence. We are all together now, all related.
The Healing Nature of the Feminine
I had several visions in 1993, preliminary visions of the new millennium.
The first vision showed me that the energy of the spiritual feminine
can heal the places on the Earth where there has been war or abuse.
The second vision spoke of a swirl of humanity, in small groups,
held in a feminine container of Love that connects heaven and earth,
uniting spirit and matter. Men and women alike are learning to be
receptive to the feminine aspect of the divine.
Yet there is a need for women, in particular, to recognize what
the dreams continue to reveal: that women can work together in a
new way for the sake of the earth. Our children, our families, all
life, depend upon us now more than ever. When women claim their
nature — and I know this is not easy — we bring the
energy of real change into life. This is the magic that women have,
for we live in two worlds. The feminine container of love unites
spirit and matter, heaven and earth. This bond is sacred —
it is our connection to life and to the Creator.
If we are identified with our 'doing,' we will miss the opportunity
being given to discover the power of an emerging feminine way of
being. If we are willing to live the unknown, to wait and listen
and take the risk of bringing our light into the open, then life
can change. The words from the soul tell us, do not fear.
The Ways of Oneness
We all know that a new energy of oneness is being given to humanity.
In many fields — medicine, computer technology, physics, biology,
spirituality — we are now seeing reflections of our interconnectedness.
I love the example of the mycelium of mushrooms. The mushroom is
the fruiting body of a much more extensive organism, the mycelium,
growing in the earth. Overlapping mosaics of mycelial mats permeate
all the landmasses on the planet in the first two to four inches
of soil. One biologist describes mushroom mycelia as a type of planet-wide
biological internet that transmits information, working as an organic
whole.
The nature of mycelia is a beautiful metaphor for how I see women
working together. Many different images have come in the dreams
and visions of women about this new way of being. Here is one woman's
vision:
I am standing in a room, the size of a bedroom. It
has no windows or doors, but is very expansive. I don't feel closed
in at all. In the center of the room taking all the space is a sphere
that I feel is earth. The sphere is a web of inter-connecting lights
and I can see the lines connecting the lights. Not all of the lights
are lit. I'm standing before it and I understand that it is my responsibility
to tend/nurture the lights. Each light is unique and the only place
where I can get light bulbs is Home Depot....which if you remember,
I love Home Depot!
We each have access to this web of light through our individual
consciousness. Another friend from a different culture and country
describes a similar organic structure in her vision.
I was lying in a wooded area, and my whole lower
legs were just earth. I went from that image to seeing that this
connection just below the earth consisted of many veins or roots,
and suddenly I knew that through these roots, all women were connected.
Some areas were filled with light, while there were areas of darkness
where these interconnections had not yet formed.
This symbolic imagery reminds me of the mycelia—invisible,
yet with a cellular intelligence that works as a whole. What is
interesting to me is that an ancient way of women is being restructured
to meet the needs of the time. This sacred network is made up of
individuals, each with her own unique inner connection to the divine
but also together as one.
The beauty is that the spiritual feminine flows across the boundaries
of all cultures and religions. At the turn of the New Year, I had
a dream that further deepened my understanding of the role of women
at this time. I was told that, 'All women have the wisdom of
pearl.' Then I saw a woman with a translucent jewel-like light
shining from the center of her chest. I was told, 'This light
is inside all women.' This is the pearl that belongs to each
woman, an ancient wisdom that needs to be lived in our own, ordinary
lives, each of us with our own unique pattern.
I know that many women have experienced great suffering and darkness.
It can feel nearly impossible to claim our real nature at times
when doubt, fear, and insecurity grab hold. But this claiming, this
'standing up' of each of us, I believe, will allow the healing energy
of life to flow freely, in ways we do not yet understand.
Here is another dream sent by a friend:
I am walking among a crowd as they are singing, looking
for something or someone. I finally come to a place where it is
mostly women...Suddenly, as the next verse of the song begins, the
women, one by one, then more and more, stand up as they are singing
— and I realize that only the women are singing — and
the sound grows and grows, and it's like nothing I've ever heard
before.... All around, as far as the eye can see, women are standing
up to sing this song together... the women have chosen to arise—to
awaken.
Listening to the song of our own soul and learning to bring this
song into our daily life are part of the awakening of feminine consciousness.
I was recently invited to give a workshop at Shakti Rising, an innovative
recovery home for young women in San Diego. At the end of the workshop
the young women were asked what they learned from our time together,
and their responses were moving and revealing: I learned that
there is a place inside me that cannot be violated. I didn't know
that. From another: I feel hope. I can now feel a real
connection to all the women in the world doing this work, and this
gives me strength.
And then, a young woman with a particularly difficult history spoke.
So quietly, she said, I didn't know that I had beauty inside
of me. This is what sticks with me. This is the song, calling
to women in different ways, asking us to remember who we are. Each
of us is needed, each song a part of the whole.
